Conclusions:
Under the conditions of this study the test material was flammable. The test material has been determined to be in Packing Group II of Division 4.1 for classification to the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th revised edition 2009; and in Category 1 for classification to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008 on Classification Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures.
Executive summary:

The flammable/readily combustible properties of the test item were investigated in accordance with Test N.1 of the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th revised edition 2009.

In a Preliminary Screening Test, the pile burned with a yellow flame and a very bright glow and propagated combustion over 200 mm in 48 seconds, leaving a white/grey residue. This result prompted the test material to be investigated further.

In the Main Test, the pile burned with a yellow flame and a very bright glow and propagated combustion over 100 mm in 33 seconds, leaving a grey/white residue. Due to this conclusive result, only one run of the experiment was carried out.

Pyrophoric properties: The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied. According to the manufacturer, tantalum has no pyrophoric properties as this would be noticed during production and handling. In contact with air, tantalum is oxidized to its metal oxide, tantalum pentoxide.



Flammability in contact with water: The study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water.


The water solubility of tantalum was investigated according to EU Method A.6, OECD 105 and OECD 29. Under the conditions of the study no reaction with water was observed. 


 


Furthermore, the substance does neither self-heat, nor does it emit flammable gases upon contact with water.

The test material has been determined to be in Packing Group II of Division 4.1 for classification to the United Nations Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods Manual of Tests and Criteria, 5th revised edition 2009; and in Category 1 for classification to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008 on Classification Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures. This is due to propagated combustion over a distance of 100 mm taking 33 seconds.
