There is no data available on the substance or its main constituents. There is data available on closely related analogues. From this analysis there is evidence that the lower members of the butyl E series glycol ethers do not show skin sensitising properties neither do molecules containing tri and tetraethylene glycol ether structures have skin sensitising properties. Extrapolation of experimental data from these member of the glycol ether family (in this case primarily to the tri, tetra, penta and hexaethylene glycol butyl ethers) is scientifically justified.

Studies were carried out with the substances 2 -butoxyethanol and 2 -(2 -butoxyethoxy)ethanol, which broadly followed the requirements of guideline M&K skin sensitisation studies. No adverse skin sensitisation reactions were observed in either study. Brake Fluid 500 DOT 4, a mixture of borated and non-borated triethylene glycol methyl ether, was tested for skin sensitisation using the Guinea pig Magnusson and Kligman method. No evidence of skin sensitisation was seen in the study. Because of the structural similarity of these two substances and the overall body of evidence of the propensity of glycol ethers to not cause skin sensitisation, these results can be reliably be interpolated to the registered UCVB substances.
