Results and discussion

Results:
As requested by EPA, DuPont reviewed the medical records of employees working in the phenylenediamine manufacturing unit at the Chambers Works plant. For the 12 men that had worked with phenylenediamines for more than 10 years, the mean hemoglobin and oxygen saturation values ranged from 14.5-16.8 g/dL and 91.5-96.3%, respectively [normal values are 14.0-17.2 and 92% or greater, respectively). Additionally, in reviewing clinical records of a 7-year period (1975-1982), there were 27 cases of skin irritation allegedly caused by exposure to the phenylenediamines. Each case was investigated for evidence of adverse blood effects, i.e., less than 90% oxygen saturation. No adverse effects were found. In conclusion, after many years of manufacture of phenylene-diamines with concurrent routine biological monitoring, DuPont concluded that employees as a result of their working with phenylenediamines are not at risk of methemoglobinemia.
