Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Typically, the purity of sodium metaphosphate is > 80% (dry weight, after excluding water). All impurities present at >1% are other inorganic phosphates (typically sodium linear chain phosphates) or other related inorganic substances which do not significantly affect its toxicological and ecotoxicological properties. No one impurity is >10%. There are no hazardous impurities present within the substance at levels > 0.1%.

Sodium metaphosphate has a melting point of > 450°C and is considered to be moderately soluble in water (54.8 to 59.7 % w/w at 20 ± 0.5°C, pH of solution was 7.2). The following additional observations were made in the water solubility study:

The temperature range 10 to 30°C had no significant influence on the observed solubility of the test material. The predicted values for dissociation constant obtained using the ACD/I-Lab Web Service (ACD/pKa 8.03) were outside the range of 3 to 10 and therefore the investigation of effect of pH was not required.

In addition, sodium metaphosphate is not considered to possess any of the following hazardous physico-chemical properties; autoflammability and/or self-ignition, flammability, explosiveness and oxidising properties.
