Description of key information

Various terrestrial toxicity data are reported for tetrachloroethylene. Long-term studies have been conducted with three trophic levels/species; invertebrates (Eisenia fetida) (Vonk et al., 1986),plants (e.g.Phaseolus vulagaris) (Vonk et al., 1986) and soil dwelling bacteria. The lowest NOEC reported is for nitrification in a loam soil with a NOEC of ≤ 0.1 mg/kg wet weight (Vonk et al., 1986). It should be noted that it is very difficult to test for toxicity to terrestrial species due to the volatilisation of tetrachloroethylene from the test medium and for some systems it is not easy to test organisms in sealed systems which minimise the effects of volatilisation.
