Description of key information

For freshwater algae the lowest toxicity values were the 72-h EC50 of 3.64 mg/l and the 72-h EC10 of 1.77 mg/l found in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Additional information

A 72-h EC50 of 3.64 mg/l is reported for the algaeChlamydomonas reinhardtiiby Brack and Rottler (1994). The test conditions are fully described in the paper, and the test can be considered valid. In the same study Brack and Rottler (1994) reported a 72-h EC10 of 1.77 mg/l for the algaeChlamydomonas reinhardtii. For the marine speciesSkeletonema costatuma 7-day EC50 higher than 16 mg/l (Erickson and Freedman, 1978).

 

Other studies were not reliable or not assignable or did not assess effects on the growth rate. A 48-hour NOEC of 1 mg/l is reported by Erickson and Hawkins (1980) for estuarine phytoplankton. No indication is given as to the species tested and the endpoint assessed was photosynthesis therefore the result is not considered valid. Publication from the USEPA (1980) report a 96-hour EC50 of 500 mg/l (USEPA, 1980). Studies from Knie et al (1983) and Peason et al (1975) report effect on photosynthesis. These studies were not found critical and are not used in the assessment.
