Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusions:
Lactic acid is soluble in most polar solvents, but sparingly soluble to insoluble in nonpolar solvents like hexane and toluene.
Executive summary:

The objective of this piece of research was to determine the solubility of lactic acid (crystals) in a number of common organic solvents and Purac products. With the results the best solvent(s) could be chosen to wash lactic acid crystals. Another objective was to increase the basic knowledge on lactic acid. Results were obtained by stirring dry lactic acid crystals at a certain temperature in a solvent. After 0.75 - 1 hour a sample was taken and analyzed for lactic acid (free acidity). The results are for pure monomeric lactic acid, therefore the solubility for lactic acid containing oligomers and/or water can be different.

Lactic acid is soluble in most polar solvents, but sparingly soluble to insoluble in nonpolar solvents like hexane and toluene.

This information is used in a read-across approach in the assessment of the target substance. For details and justification of read-across please refer to the read-across report attached to IUCLID section 13.
