Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

2 -ethylhexanoyl chloride (CAS 760 -67 -8) rapidly hydrolyzes (T1/2 < 12 hours) and decomposes in water into the main products 2 -ethylhexanoic acid (CAS 149 -57 -5) and HCl (CAS 7647-01-0). The PBT/vPvB criteria do not apply to inorganic substances, HCl is not assessed with regard to PBT/vPvB properties; therefore, the PBT/vPvB assessment is mainly based on data for valeryl chloride and its organic hydrolysis product 2 -ethylhexanoic acid (CAS 149 -57 -5).

Since 2 -ethylhexanoic acid is readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria) it should be regarded as not P/vP. The substance is not B/vB since the parent compound itself and its hydrolysis product acid have a log Kow less than 3 (see IUCLID chapter 4.7).

However, CAS 760 -67 -8) is not T since the lowest available acute value is >> 0.1 mg/L (Algae: 96 -h EC10: 16 mg/L, see IUCLID Ch. 6.1.5) and the substance holds no relevant classification.

In conclusion, the parent compound is considered to be neither PBT nor vPvB, based on the available data for the hydrolysis product 2 -ethylhexanoic acid.
