Toxicity to soil microorganisms

Administrative data

Endpoint:
toxicity to soil microorganisms
Type of information:
experimental study planned
Study period:
2 years from ECHA's approval (final decision on TP)
Justification for type of information:
No data on soil micro-organisms is available for hexylene glycol.
In Annexes IX and X of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, it is laid down that short and/or long-term toxicity testing on soil organisms shall be proposed by the registrant if the chemical safety assessment indicates the need to investigate further the toxicity of chemical substance in this compartment. No data on soil toxicity is available at now for hexylene glycol. According to Figures R7.11.2 "Scheme A: general risk assessment scheme" and R7.11.3 "Scheme B: Integrated testing strategy (Annex IX and X substances)" (p. 156 -157) from Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, chapter R7c (June 2017, v3.0), hazard assessment of hexylene glycol for soil organisms should be screened following Table R7.11.2 "Soil hazard categories and screening assessment (for waiving standard information according to Annex IX and X)" (p. 158). Hexylene glycol is readily biodegradable, not adsorbing and not very toxic to aquatic life. Therefore, it falls within the scope of hazard category 1. In this category, the EPM method alone is sufficient for screening purposes. Risk assessment for soil organisms demonstrated that there is no risk for soil organisms using the PNEC derived through equilibrium partitioning method. Therefore, the chemical safety assessment indicates no need for toxicity testing on soil organisms. Thus, no testing is proposed for hexylene glycol, in compliance with Annexes IX and X of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. However, in some case this method could be insuffisant to cover soil micro-organisms. As no data on soil micro-organisms is available for hexylene glycol, an OECD 216 study is proposed.
