Methanesulphonic acid is acutely toxic to aquatic algae.

The toxicity of methanesulphonic acid on the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum was measured in a test according to the OECD guideline 201 [Elf Atochem, 1997]. The EC50 (72h) for the growth rate was determined to be between 12 and 24 mg/L.
