Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on the flash point data, tartaric acid and its salts are not expected to be flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A collection of the flash point values was performed for tartaric acid and its salts (i.e. monosodium, monopotassium, sodium potassium, sodium, potassium and calcium tartrate). As result, two values specifically referred to tartaric acid were found. These values were similar and support the non-flammability of the substance (i.e. both values were > 200°C). Since the flash point values of tartaric acid are very high and taking into account the chemistry of its salts, it is believed that also the tartaric acid salts should not behave differently. Overall, since the flash point is an information relevant to assess the flammability of liquid substances and considering that the physical state of the tartaric acid salts is solid (at room temperature), no further investigation is deemed to be needed to characterize this property.
