Administrative data

Description of key information

There are no data for skin and eye irritation/corrosion. However, based on the fact that this substance is a chlorosilane, so generates hydrogen chloride in the presence of moisture, it is expected to be corrosive. Therefore, in accordance with Column 2 of REACH Annex VIII, the in vivo skin irritation study and eye irritation study (required in Section 8.1.1 and 8.2.1) do not need to be conducted as the available information indicates that the substance meets the criteria for classification as corrosive to skin.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Skin irritation / corrosion

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (corrosive)

Eye irritation

Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Respiratory irritation

Endpoint conclusion
Endpoint conclusion:
adverse effect observed (irritating)

Additional information

Chlorodimethylsilane hydrolyses rapidly (half-life <1 minute at pH7) in contact with water and moist air, releasing one mole of hydrogen chloride (HCl) for each mole of parent material. Although no reliable in vivo irritation/corrosion studies are available, severe skin, eye and respiratory damage can be expcted due to release of HCl. This is consistent with reliable measured data for other chlorosilanes.

Effects on skin irritation/corrosion: corrosive

Effects on eye irritation: corrosive

Effects on respiratory irritation: highly irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Chlorodimethylsilane is labelled 'R35 Causes severe burns' according to the criteria of EU Directive 67/548/EEC, and 'Skin Corr. 1A' under Regulation 1272/2008. It is assumed that substances that are corrosive to the skin are also damaging to the eyes, so there is no separate labelling for the eyes. There are no specific data for respiratory irritation. However, the pathology examination in the key acute inhalation study revealed signs of respiratory irritation/corrosion. The test substance is labelled as 'R37 Irritating to respiratory system', and the hazard statement 'EUH071 Corrosive to the respiratory tract' is proposed.
