Data on the aquatic toxicity of chloroethane (CAS 75-00-3) are available for the three trophic levels fish, Daphnia and algae.
The available data on the short-term toxicity to fish indicate no detrimental effects of the substance. The acute toxicity was tested
in two separate studies on the fish species Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) and on the species largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). The determined LC50 (96 h) values were 2500 mg/L and >2000 mg/L, respectively. A calculation based on VegaNIC version 1.2.0 using 96 hour fathead minnow model version 1.0.7 predicted a LC50 value of 322.74 mg/L. In a study on Daphnia magna an EC50 (48 h) of 69.32 mg/L (measured, geom. mean) was determined. The short-term toxicity test on the green algae Scenedesmus subspicatus determined an EC50 (72 h) value of 118 mg/L (measured, geom. mean).

Data on the long-term toxicity of chloroethane are not available. A chronic toxicity of the substance is not expected.Chloroethane is a gaseous substance. Due to the high vapour pressure of 134200 Pa a rapid evaporation from the water surface can be assumed. A fast elimination from the water phase is also predicted by the estimated Henry´s Law Constant of 1124.70 Pa m³/mol at 25 °C. Thus, the substance will not be present in the water phase and therefore a long-term exposure of aquatic organisms to the substance is unlikely.

The effect of chloroethane on aquatic microorganisms was tested in a study on the growth rate of Pseudomonas putida. Adverse effects of the substances to microorganisms were not observed.
