Short term effects on fish ranged from 74 to 725 mg B/L. Equivalent concentrations of sodium metaborate would be:


Anhydrous: 450 to 4413 mg/L,


Dihydrate: 697 to 6827 mg/L,


Tetrahydrate: 944 to 9247 mg/L.


Short term effects on aquatic invertebrates ranged from 45 to 1376 mg B/L. Equivalent concentrations of sodium metaborate would be:


Anhydrous: 274 to 8375 mg/L,


Dihydrate: 424 to 12957 mg/L,


Tetrahydrate: 574 to 17551 mg/L.


Short term effects on the algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (formerly Selenastrum capricorntum) were observed at 40 mg B/L. Equivalent concentrations of sodium metaborate would be:


Anhydrous: 243 mg/L,


Dihydrate: 377 mg/L,


Tetrahydrate: 510 mg/L.


These data support a conclusion that borates should not be classified as dangerous for the environment.
