Description of key information

A secondary source describes data on irriation to skin and eyes of rabbits (Anonymous 2004). Whereas the information on skin irritation indicates transient mild effects, effects on eyes are considered severe. Irritation of the respiratory tract is assumed from the low pKa and the effects on eye.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The reported data was described as OECD guideline compliant in the OECD SIDS dossier (Anonymous 2004)

Findings for eyes were described as conjunctivitis and diffuse corneal opacities at 24, 48 and 72h. One animal showed iritis at 24 and 48h. After 7 days, corneal vascularization was observed in all animals. Regarding skin irritation, mild findings were observed for edema and erythema which were reversible within 48h.

Considering the low pKa and the effects observed for eyes, the BONA is expected to cause respiratory irritation.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Dangerous Substance Directive (67/548/EEC)

The available study are considered reliable and suitable for classification purposes under 67/548/EEC. As a result the substance is considered to be classified as a severe irritant to eyes and as irritating to the respiratory system under Directive 67/548/EEC, as amended for the 28th time in Directive 2001/59/EC.

Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008

The available experimental test data are reliable and suitable for classification purposes under Regulation 1272/2008. As a result the substance is considered to be classified as a severe irritant to eye and as irritating to the respiratory system under Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008.
