Stability

The parent compound methyl chloroformate hydrolyses fast (DT50 = 8.64 min at 25 °C and pH 7) to methanol, HCl and CO2 (OECD TG 111; SafePharm, 2003). Methanol, however, is hydrolytically stable (Atkinson, 1989; OECD, 2004).

In air, methyl chloroformate is expected to be photodegraded by OH-radicals with a half-life of 73.7 d (US EPA, 2008). This estimation refers to dry air. In mist, rain, droplets and aerosols hydrolysis will be the major fate process in air due to the short half-life in aqueous solutions.

The half-life in air of the hydrolysis product methanol was given to be 17.2 d (Atkinson, 1989; OECD, 2004).

Phototransformation in air:

After evaporation or exposure to air, the substance and its hydrolysis product will be slowly degraded by photochemical processes.

Biodegradation

The parent compound methyl chloroformate hydrolyses toform methanol. The hydrolysis product methanol is readily biodegradable (Price et al., 1974).

Bioaccumulation

Due to the low log Kow of the parent compound and its hydrolysis products, significant accumulation in organisms is not to be expected (calculated, BASF SE, 2019).

Transport and distribution

Parent compound methyl chloroformate (CAS 79 -22 -1): Adsorption to the solid soil phase is not expected.

Hydrolysis product methanol (CAS 67 -56 -1): Adsorption to the solid soil phase is not expected.

Henry's Law Constant

Parent compound methyl chloroformate (CAS 79 -22 -1): From the water surface the substance will rapidly evaporate into the atmosphere.

Hydrolysis product methanol (CAS 67 -56 -1):  From the water surface the substance will not evaporate into the atmosphere.

Distribution modeling

Parent compound methyl chloroformate (CAS 79 -22 -1): Over time, the substance will preferentially distribute into the compartment air (72.4%) and slightly into the compartment water (27.6%).

Hydrolysis product methanol (CAS 67 -56 -1): Over time, the substance will preferentially distribute into the compartment water (87.5 %) and slightly into the compartment air (12.5 %).
