Description of key information

Klimisch 1 study (Egeler P, Kiefer R (2010): study on the acute toxicity of GaAs to zebrafish, conducted according to OECD 203. No concentration-response relationship found; no acute effect was noted at WAF of 100 mg GaAs/L. Test was conducted with the water-accommodated fraction of GaAs-powder; this physical form, however, is not relevant for the industrial production/use of GaAs where this substance is only present as a massive or as wafers. No toxicity data based on massive/wafer GaAs are available. Reported effects based on GaAs powder should therefore be considered as a worst case, predominantly reflecting the powder GaAs toxicity .

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A concentration-response relationship was not found during the 96-hour exposure period.

Based on measured concentrations in the WAF of the test item in powder form (GaAs) in 0.45µm-filtered test solutions (mean value at highest concentration on days 0 and 4), nominal, unbounded (i.e;, higher than) LC50 values were obtained:

- 96h-LC50 > WAF of 100 mg GaAs/L

- 96h-LC50 >6.3 mg Ga/L + >8.8 mg As/L

96h-LC50 values are mean values of measured concentrations at 100% of WAF at start and end of exposure.
