Results and discussion

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Executive summary:
Inhalation exposure to 3,3'-[biphenyl-4,4'-diylbis(oxy)]dianiline

The analysis of the particle size distribution of the polyimide resins imported into the EU showed that the diameters of all resins were above 60 micrometre (Mitsui Chemical 2007). Therefore, none of the material will form dusts that may be inhaled by workers. Because of the very low vapour pressure of 3,3'-[biphenyl-4,4'-diylbis(oxy)]dianiline, there will be no emission of the substance into the gas phase. The resins are used by the polymer industry in the manufacture of articles used for example by the automotive industry. These articles are manufactured by heat moulding. To this end, the polyimide resinss are melted at temperatures of approximately 400 °C. The testing of the melting point of 3,3'-[biphenyl-4,4'-diylbis(oxy)]dianiline showed that the substance melts, with decomposition, at temperatures of approximately 150 °C (Sydney et al. 2008). Thus, the heat moulding process will lead to the decomposition of any residual substance contained in the polyimide resins.

In conclusion, inhalation exposure of workers (or the general public) to 3,3'-[biphenyl-4,4'-diylbis(oxy)]dianiline can be excluded for the indentified use of the substance in the EU.
