Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In this study Red Phosphorus, untreated induced no changes in behaviour as well as no mortality of worms at the test item concentrations of 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg sediment dry weight. Also, the reproduction as well as the worm dry biomass was not statistically significant reduced at all test item concentrations compared to the control.
Thus, the lowest observed effect concentration (LOEC) was set to be at > 1000 mg/kg sediment dry weight. The overall no observed effect level (NOEC) was determined to be at 1000 mg/kg sediment dry weight.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10, LC10 or NOEC for freshwater sediment:
1 000 mg/kg sediment dw

Additional information

Red Phosphorus is not bioavailable. This is supported by two studies with sediment organisms which shows no toxicity in the highest tested concentration at 1000 mg/kh dw. Based on these facts toxicity to other sediment organisms is unlikely.
