Description of key information

NOEC (28 d) of ≥ 100 mg/L for activated sludge microorganisms (OECD 301C)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity of tetradecyl myristate (CAS 3234-85-3) to activated sludge microorganisms was investigated in a biodegradation study conducted according to OECD 301C under GLP conditions (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan, 1992). A test concentration of 100 mg/L (nominal) did not inhibit the biodegradation process of the test substance. Therefore, the test substance is not toxic to activated sludge microorganisms and the test concentration can be used as a NOEC value for the toxicity to activated sludge microorganisms. Thus, a NOEC (28 d) of ≥ 100 mg/L resulted. An additional study with the read-across substanceFatty acids, C8 - 10, C12 - 18-alkyl esters (CAS 95912-86-0) is available for this endpoint. This read-across is in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 and justified in detail in the overall summary (IUCLID chapter 6.1) and within the category justification in IUCLID Section 13. In this case of read-across, the best suited (highest degree of structural similarity, nearest physico-chemical properties) read-across substance was used for the assessment. Nevertheless, as it can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in section 13 and the overall summary, all reliable data in the category support the hazard assessment of each category member by showing a consistent pattern of results. The second study with the read-across substance Fatty acids, C8 - 10, C12 - 18-alkyl esters (CAS 95912-86-0) was performed according to OECD 209 under GLP conditions (Hammer, 2013). Activated sludge microorganisms were exposed to the test substance up to a nominal concentration of 1000 mg/L. No effects were observed based on the respiration rate after 3 h of incubation resulting in an EC10 (3 h) of > 1000 mg/L. An increase of respiration was recorded in all treatments compared to the control values. In conclusion the toxicity to activated sludge microorganisms is assumed to be low.

Based on the available result from one structurally related read-across substance (in accordance to Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5) which is characterized by a similar ecotoxicological profile and comparable structure and a NOEC from a biodegradation study, it can be concluded that tetradecyl myristate (CAS 3234-85-3) will not exhibit effects on activated sludge microorganisms.
