Additional information

No exposure to the terrestrial compartment, including soil, is intended during the life cycle of the test substance. Furthermore, indirect exposure to the environment is unlikely, which is also indicated by the manufacturing process. Even despite the worst-case approach applied in the exposure and risk assessment releases to the terrestrial environment are very low (i.e. negligible). Therefore, soil exposure is considered irrelevant and no experiments on soil organisms are provided. It is shown in the assessment that soil exposure resulting from sludge application to land can be excluded (i.e. no application of STP sludge on agricultural soil) and that aerial deposition is negligible (e.g. half-life in air: 3.87h). Other exposure pathways such as irrigation and/or contact with contaminated waste are unlikely – as indicated by the operational conditions for the respective industrial scenarios. The low PEC values for the soil compartment estimated for the local and regional scale as well as the total releases to the soil compartment further underline those conclusions. Thus, respective endpoints can be waived.


Nonetheless, as a robust justification of “unlikely exposure” based on Col. 2 of REACH Annex IX cannot be delivered because of the insufficient documentation on downstream uses available to the registrant, it is deemed as reasonable to undertake an Annex XI.3.2. (a) route based on derived PNEC. Accordingly, an Earthworm Reproduction Test according to OECD 222 is planned to be conducted by the lead registrant/consortium, to verify absence of risk/hazard for the terrestrial compartment.
