Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Upon contact with water lithium nitrate hydrolyses and lithium and nitrate are formed. PNECs were derived from most sensitive species of each compartment/ endpoint and values for LiNO3 and lithium ion were shown.

Derivation of PNECs for LiNO3

For LiNO3 the PNECs derived for lithium were corrected as follows:

PNEC (LiNO3) = PNEC (Li) x (M(LiNO3) / (M(Li))

The molecular weight for LiNO3 is 68.95 g/mol.

The atomic weight for Li is ca. 6.94 g/mol, and should be multiplied where > 1 Li molecule is present.

PNEC (LiNO3) = PNEC (Li) x (68.95 / [1*6.94])

The updated PNECs for sediment and soil have not yet been integrated in the risk assessment calculation. An update of the CSR is planned for November 2020.

Conclusion on classification

Classification for lithium nitrate:

Based on the available data, lithium nitrate has not to be classified according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP) criteria as the acute (LC50/ ErC50) and chronic toxicity (ECx/ NOEC) values are > 1 mg/L.

Overview of results used for Classification and Labelling:

Based on read-across

Fish, short-term, freshwater: LC50 = 257 mg/L (read-across from lithium chloride)

Fish, long-term, freshwater: NOEC = 28 mg/L (read-across from lithium hydroxide monohydrate)

Daphnia magna, short-term, freshwater: EC50 = 405 mg/L (read-across from lithium chloride)

Daphnia magna, long-term, freshwater: NOEC = 16.9 mg/L (read-across from lithium)

Algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata), long-term, freshwater: ErC50 = 652 mg/L and NOEC 41 mg/L (read-across from lithium chloride)

Activated sludge: EC50 = 521 mg/L, EC10 = 228 mg/L (read-across from lithium hydroxide)
