Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

In the key study, several experiments have been carried out in a small atmospheric chamber of 150L then in the European large atmospheric chamber (200 m3) EUPHORE in Valencia, Spain, in presence of OH and, eventually, NOx. The reaction DMDS + OH shows that degradation products are formaldehyde HCHO, sulfur dioxide SO2 and methanesulfonic acid CH3SO3H. Mean half-life is about 40 minutes in normal condition. In polluted areas (presence of NOx) half-life can decrease to 15 minutes.

In the support studies DMDS shows 50%degradation (for indirect photolysis) between 1.1h (rate constant = 7.39e-13 cm³/molecule*sec) and 13.8 d (rate constant = < 8,3E-19 cm³/(molecule*sec).
