Description of key information
Following a GLP study in accordance with EC test method A.10, cerium trinitrate is concluded to be not highly flammable (Cerutti, 2005). From day to day handling of the substance, cerium trinitrate is concluded not to have pyrophoric properties nor to be flammable in contact with water. Finally, the substance is not considered self-heating, based on the observations of a GLP study performed according to EC test method A.16 and an additional Grewer oven test, in which the temperature of the test item did not deviate from that in the oven up to at least 400°C (Cerutti, 2005).

Justification for classification or non-classification
Pyrophoricity.
In the daily use and handling of cerium trinitrate during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that cerium trinitrate
has pyrophoric properties.
Flammability in contact with water.
Under conditions where cerium trinitrate is in contact with water (which includes the production of cerium trinitrate in aqueous solutions as applied by some manufacturers) no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that cerium trinitrate is flammable in contact with water.
Flammability.
From a flammability test (EC A.10) cerium trinitrate is concluded to be not highly flammable (Cerutti, 2005). This results in an absence of classification under the CLP regulation.
Self-heating.
In an EC A.16 test and an additional Grewer oven test, the temperature of the test item did not deviate from the oven temperature up to at least 400°C (Cerutti, 2005). Based on these results, it can be safely concluded that cerium trinitrate is not self-heating.
