Nitroguanidine could not be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the dried substance but Nitroguanidine is melting by generating smoke emissions.

Nitroguanidine could not be ignited by a open gas flame held onto the substance for approx. 10-15 seconds but nitroguanidine is melting by generating smoke emissions and changes its colour into yellow.

Nitroguanidine scorched shortly and extinguished quickly when put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds but nitroguanidine is melting and evaporates in the pure test. In the mixture with potassium nitrate an explosive flame occurs.

Executive summary:

The tests were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline A.10.

The nitroguanidine moistened with 20% water was dried before testing. The dried nitroguanidine could not be ignited by the 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the substance.

In a second test approx. 200 mg of nitroguanidine were put into a flat iron bowl and heated with an open gas flame burner for 10-15 seconds. No ignition of nitroguanidine was observed.

In a third test nitroguanidine and a 1:1 mixture of nitroguanidine with potassium nitrate was put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds and was scorched shortly scorched quickly extinguished.

Therefore it is concluded that nitroguanidine is not highly flammable.

1. The testing apparature consists of a bunsen burner and a heat resistant tile. The flame of the bunsen burner (approx 20 mm high and 5 mm wide) heats a pile of test substance for 10 seconds by the flame of the bunsen burner. The test is conducted five times.

2. The testing apparatur consists of a hemispherical bowl (inner diameter 120 mm), wall thickness 1 mm and a teclu burner (19 mm diameter). Approx. 5 ml or in care of very explosive substances even less of the test substance are put into the red heated iron bowl (approx. 700 °C). It is reported if the test substance ignites immediately or at what retardation time, how long the substances is burning, if the burning is increased with more substance and if there is a residue. The test is conducted three times; the shortest burning time is recorded in the tables, if relevant.

The tests were conducted according to a method developed by the Federal German Instute for Material Testing (BAM). Although there is no information available with regard to substance purity it is assumed that the authors - members of the German Institute for Material Testing - used adequate substances to obtain representative results. Therefore the test results are assumed to be valid.

Approx. 5 ml of nitroguanidine were put onto a heat resistant tile and heated with an open gas flame burner for 10 seconds. the substance was ignited but distinguished afterwards.

In a second test 5 ml nitroguanidine were put into a red heated hemsipheric iron bowl (approx. 700 °C). The burning time was observed to be 8 seconds.

Therefore it is concluded that nitroguanidine is not highly flammable.

Description of key information

There are two studies available.

The key study was conducted according to a method similar to guideline A.10 whereas the supporting study was conducted according to a method developed by the German Federal Institute for Material Testing (BAM) which is also similar to guideline A.10. In both studies nitroguanidine is considered to be not highly flammable.

There are two studies available. The key study was conducted according to a method very similar to guideline A.10. Allthough both studies indicate the same results the key study was chosen because of the more detailed description of the test material.

Although the supporting study has slightly other testing conditions (e.g. significantly less material used) its results are in line with the those of the key study.

Therefore it is concluded that nitroguanidine is not highly flammable.
