Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Testing of the aqueous solution of BTMAC is technically impossible.
Testing of solid BTMAC by laser diffraction is technically impossible, because solid BTMAc is very hygroscopic.

Additional information

Over 95 % of the BTMAC is produced and marketed as 60% aqueous solution. Particle size distribution testing of that material is thus technically impossible.

About 10 t/a are produced and marketed as solid BTMAC. Solid BTMAC is very hygroscopic and the wet crystals stick together in smaller and bigger lumps when exposed to the air. These lumps cannot be analysed by laser diffraction due to the moisture in the substances. Moisture droplets are formed in a dispersing solvent, which interfere with the measurement of the particle size of the crystals. Sieving is not an alternative since the substance sticks to the sieves.

Based on this it is concluded that it is technically not possible to determine the particle size distribution of these substances in the commercial form.
