First-aid measures

Inhalation

Concerns inhalation of sodium combustion fumes.Place the victim in a clean and safe atmosphere. If there are breathing difficulties, give oxygen under medical supervision. In the event of respiratory failure, carry out artificial ventilation. Call a doctor.

Skin contact

Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Wash copiously with water for at least 20 minutes. In the event of irritation, consult a doctor.

In the event of liquid sodium splashes: Remove as much sodium as possible from the skin using a blunt instrument, for example a spatula. Wash copiously with water for at least 20 minutes. Consult a doctor

Eye contact

Remove immediately adhering matter. Remove contact lenses. Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 20 minutes and seek medical advice.

Ingestion

Care: do not give an unconscious person anything to swallow. Do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth. Immediately give large quantities of water to drink.Call a doctor..

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media

Use extinguishing agents which are appropriate for the burning products. If possible, smother the fire using dry mineral products such as anhydrous sodium carbonate, dry salt (NaCl), dry sand, etc. Do not use: water, foam, CO2, halogenated or hydrated products.

Specific intervention methods

Protect from water splashes.

If possible, move the sodium containers away from the fire. Sodium may re-ignite after the fire has been brought under control. Pay attention to run-offs and drains which can spread the fire as the sodium escapes.

Evacuate all non-essential personnel. Protect intervention teams with positive pressure breathing masks covering the whole face, protective flameproof clothing, safety gloves and boots.

Extinguishing media which shall not be used for safety reasons

Water, Reacts violently with water, liberating highly flammable gases., wet sodium carbonate, Carbon dioxide (CO2).

Accidental release measures

Protect from water (sodium reacts violently in contact with water and releases hydrogen). Remove any flame or source of heat.

Personal precautions

Evacuate any non-essential personnel. Protect intervention teams with face masks, fireproof clothing, safety gloves, safety footwear.

Environmental precautions

Avoid dispersal in the environment, where sodium can react with moisture to cause fire. Produces corrosive soda.

Methods for cleaning up

Cover with anhydrous sodium carbonate or dry salt (NaCl) or, if these products are unavailable, with dry sand, and shovel into a dry, clean container lined with anhydrous sodium carbonate or dry salt (NaCl). Cover with the same materials. Keep the container closed

Handling and storage

Handling

The workplace must be dry and well ventilated.

Ensure there is a safety shower close to the workplace.

Handle away from water and moisture.

Use clean, dry implements. Wear fireproof clothing, safety gloves, safety glasses and safety footwear.

When the sodium is in liquid form, wear a faceshield in place of safety glasses.

Storage

Store the product away from air and moisture, in hermetically sealed drums or containers (original packaging), covered by inert gas, oil or other protection against oxygen.

Store in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place, well away from water, combustible or oxidising materials, sources of heat and sparks.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure limits: No data available

General precautions: Capture fume emissions at source using an effective and regularly inspected installation.

Personal safety equipment

Inhalation: When working in a fume-laden atmosphere, wear a filtering breathing mask covering the whole face.

Hand protection

Solid form: impervious chemical resistant protective gloves complying with EN 374-3 indice K or equivalent

Molten form: heat insulating gloves complying with EN 407 or equivalent

Eye protection

Solid form: Safety glasses complying with EN166 (material required: polycarbonate)

Molten form: Faceshield complying with EN166 (material required: polycarbonate) or equivalent

Protection of the skin and body

Solid form: Protective clothing resistant to alkaline compounds complying with EN13034 or equivalent, Safety footwear, Safety helmet

Molten form: full fireproof protective clothing composed of aramid fibers (the less hygroscopic quality of aramid is required) or equivalent, Safety footwear, Safety helmet

Hygiene measures

Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. When using do not eat, drink or smoke. Wash hands before breaks and immediately after handling the product.

Stability and reactivity

Stability

Stable product under normal conditions

Dangerous reaction

React violently with water, releasing hydrogen and soda. Burns in air, releasing corrosive and possibly toxic fumes. If liquid  It may ignite spontaneously in humid air. Reacts vigorously and may explode in the presence of oxidising agents, certain acids, halogenated compounds, CO2, ammonia, etc.

Disposal considerations

Product waste

Sodium waste must be considered as Hazardous waste.

Destruction/Disposal

Take the same precautions when handling and storing used sodium products as with new sodium products. Used products must be disposed of in accordance with the legislation in force concerning the handling of dangerous waste materials. Burn sodium residues in a furnace and process the resulting emissions. Clean contaminated parts in dry steam in suitably equipped premises.Take care to guard against the release of hydrogen and against splashes.

Contaminated packaging:  Destruction/Disposal

If recycling is not possible, dispose of in accordance with the regulations in force.
