Description of key information

No effects up to the limit of water solubility based on growth rate (WS < 0.05 mg/L in aqua dest., OECD 201).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

One experimental study investigating the toxicity of isononanoic acid, C16-18 alkyl esters (CAS 111937-03-2) to freshwater algae is available (Salinas, 2013). The study was performed according to OECD 201 under GLP conditions with the algae Desmodesmus subspicatus. A water accommodated fraction (WAF) of nominal 100 mg/L was tested as a limit test. The nominal concentrations could not be measured analytically since no suitable analytical method could be established. No effects on growth rate of algae were observed after 72 h resulting in a NOELR ≥ 100 mg/L and an EL50 > 100 mg/L. However, a significant effect (16.8% inhibition) on yield was observed resulting in a NOELR (72 h) < 100 mg/L and an EL50 (72 h) > 100 mg/L. Based on growth rate it can be concluded that no toxicological effects on algae are expected up to the limit of water solubility for isononanoic acid, C16-18 alkyl esters.
