Additional information

Sec-alkane sulfonate-sodium salts SAS (as 30% aqueous solution) were tested for potential point mutagenic potential in the Salmonella typhimurium strains TA 98, TA 100, TA 1535 and TA 1537 using the methodology of Ames. The tests were performed in the presence and in the absence of a metabolizing system derived from rat liver homogenate (S9 -mix). Based on the results, sec-alkane sulfonate-sodium salts SAS is not mutagenic in these bacterial test systems neither with nor without exogenous metabolic activation. Additionally, in two separate in vivo micronucleus assays in different strains of mice, sec-alkane sulfonate-sodium salts (as 60% aqueous solution) was devoid of any chromosomal mutagenic effects.

Short description of key information:
Mutagenicity tests in vitro as well as in vivo have not revealed any indications that sec-alkane sulfonate-sodium salts SAS represents a point mutagenic and/or chromosomal mutagenic hazard.

Endpoint Conclusion: No adverse effect observed (negative)

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available data from in vitro and in vivo mutagenicity assays, no indications concerning a mutagenic and/or genotoxic potential of sec-alkane sulfonate-sodium salts SAS exist. Based hereupon a classification of sec-alkane sulfonates-sodium salts SAS regarding genetic toxicity is not deducible.
