Description of key information

As the parent compound rapidly hydrolyses in aqueous system the assessment of the biodegradability based on the hydrolysis product valeric acid, which is readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).

Additional information

Parent compound valeryl chloride (CAS 638-29-9): No experimental data are available for the parent compound. However, since the substance is known to hydrolyse very quickly to valeric acid (CAS 109 -52 -4) and HCl (CAS 7647 -01 -0), the assessment of the biodegradability is based on the hydrolysis product valeric acid (CAS 109 -52 -4). Valeric acid is readily biodegradable according to OECD criteria (see below).

 

Hydrolysis product valeric acid (CAS 109-52-4): In a ready biodegradability test according to OECD 301D (Ready Biodegradability: Closed Bottle Test) using domestic sewage (adaption not specified) the O2 consumption was 72% after 30 days (OECD SIDS 2010, SIAM 29).

 

The result on the ready biodegradability of the hydrolysis product valeric acid is supported by a QSAR model:

CATALOGIC v5.13.1.156: BOD 28 days MITI [OECD 301C] v11.15: ca. 100% after 28 d (in Applicability domain: 100%) - readily biodegradable

Conclusion:

Based on the available data, the parent compound valeryl chloride and its hydrolysis product valeric acid are expected to be readily biodegradable (according to OECD criteria).
