Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Ready biodegradable. The test substance exceeded the pass level of 60% within 28 days in two ready biodegradability tests and the 10-day window criterion was met in the key study.

The test substance was assessed for ready biodegradation according to OECD guideline 301 F and was found to be readily biodegradable. It achieved > 60% biodegradation within the 28d test period (actual 68% after 22 days). The biodegradation reached 10 % on day 2 (start of the 10 -day window) and reached 63% on day 12 (end of the 10 day window), thus fulfilling the 10 day window. As suggested in the OECD 301F method, the toxicity of the test material for the inoculum was checked. The curves obtained with aniline alone (reference material) and with the test substance plus aniline showed no toxic effect of the test substance on the micro-organisms at the test concentration of 100mg/L. This concentration can be considered as a NOEC for toxicity to STP microorganisms.

In a supporting study, the test material was assessed for ready biodegradation according to OECD guideline 301B, modified with the use of sealed vessels. The test material exceeded the pass level of 60% theoretical carbon dioxide within 28 days but failed the 10-day window criterion.

Realising that ready biodegradability tests may sometimes fail because of the stringent test conditions, it is generally accepted that positive test results supersede negative test results. Thus 2 -methylundecanal is regarded as readily biodegradable based on the key study.
