Description of key information

In accordance with section 9.4.1 of Column 2 of Annex VIII, this study need not be conducted if there is no emission to a sewage treatment plant. As 2,6-Xylenol is used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of polymers and certain pesticides, and emission data demonstrate that emission to wastewater is negligible, the Chemical Safety Assessment indicated that there was no further need to investigate the toxicity of the substance to microorganisms.

Additional information

Supporting information is provided to help address this endpoint. As part of a study to investigate the ready biodegradability of the read across substance 2, 4, 6-trimethylphenol (TMP; CAS 527-60-6), microorganisms were exposed to the test material as an inhibition control. The study was conducted in accordance with the standardised guideline OECD 301 D under GLP conditions.

Activated sludge, non-adapted was exposed to the test material under aerobic conditions for 28 days at a nominal concentration of 1.685 mg/L. Oxygen consumption was monitored to determine the extent of biodegradation. Phthalic acid was used as reference material.

In this study no inhibition of inoculum was seen at the test concentration of 1.685 mg/L.
