Additional information

2-Vinylpyridine is a clear to light yellow liquid with an unpleasant odor. It is flammable, with a flashpoint of 50 oC. It has a vapour pressure of 25.3 hPa. It is very soluble in water, and partitions preferentially into water (log Kow = 1.54). 2VP is a reactive monomer and is supplied with the addition of a polymerisation inhibitor (tert-butylcatechol). Absorption of water, introduction of impurities or warming can result in consumption of the inhibitor, with resultant autopolymerisation. If this exothermic process occurs, there could potentially be a run-away reaction with increased pressure, rupture of containers, and fire. Technical guidance instructions on storage and handling, in combination with safety data sheet instructions, have contributed to its history of safe use.
