Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
Additional information
Acutely harmful to aquatic organisms.
The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.
The test substance is soluble in water and dissociates to morpholinium and toluene-4-sulphonate ions. Since there is only one study available with the test substance morpholinium toluene-4 -sulphonate which assesses the toxicity to fish, all other endpoints have been assessed with the substance's dissociation products morpholine and toluene-4 -sulphonate.
Regarding toluene-4 -sulphonate, algae are the most sensitive aquatic species with an ErC50 of 73 mg/L a.i. and a NOEC of 44.8 mg/L a.i. Fish invertebrates and microorganisms appear to be much less sensitive. It may well be the acidity of the test substance that are the cause of the observed algal toxicity. The pH of the test medium was between 3 and 5 in the replicates at the end of the test. The pH in fish, invertebrate and microorganism test systems remained in the normal aquatic environmental range.
The dissociation product morpholine also shows most sensitivity to aquatic algae with an ErC50 of 28 mg/L and a NOEC of 10 mg/L and has similar effects on aquatic invertebrates with an EC50 value of 45 mg/L. Effect concentrations on fish and microorganisms are to be found far above 100 mg/L.
Only one study on the long-term toxicity of the test substance and its dissociation products is available, respectively. The chronic toxicity of morpholine to the test species Daphnia magna has been examined which resulted in a NOEC of 5 mg/L.
