Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 207 (Earthworm, Acute Toxicity Tests)
Deviations:
not specified
GLP compliance:
yes

Test material

Reference
Name:
Unnamed
Type:
Constituent
Details on test material:
- Substance type: Fatty alcohol ethoxylate with 10 EO
- Analytical purity: 99.7% a.s.

Sampling and analysis

Analytical monitoring:
no
Details on sampling:
- Concentrations: 0 ppm, 30 ppm, 100 ppm, 300 ppm, 1000 ppm

Test substrate

Vehicle:
no
Details on preparation and application of test substrate:
- Method of application to soil surface (if used): 5 g test substance were mixed with 95 g soil and dilutions of 3 : 10 and 1 : 10 were made. 10 g of each dilution were cooled by liquid air and together with deep frozen soil (150 g / vessel / concentration) homogenized. In a next step, the soil was mixed with the remaining amount of soil of 508 g.

Test organisms

Test organisms (species):
Eisenia fetida
Animal group:
annelids
Details on test organisms:
TEST ORGANISM
- Common name: earthworm
- Source: Dr. Edwards (EG-Ringtest 1983), than own breeding
- Age at test initiation (mean and range, SD): 2 month
- Weight at test initiation (mean and range, SD): 300 - 600 mg

ACCLIMATION
- Acclimation period: 24 h
- Acclimation conditions (same as test or not): same as test
- Health during acclimation (any mortality observed): no mortality

no
Total exposure duration:
14 d

Test conditions

Test temperature:
20 +/- 2 °C
Moisture:
The water content was adjusted 7 days prior to the test start to 35.02% of the basic substrate (= 25.93% soil moisture)
Details on test conditions:
TEST SYSTEM
- Test container (material, size): glass vessels (1 - 2 L)
- Amount of soil or substrate: 658 g/vessel
- No. of organisms per container (treatment): 10

Nominal: 0, 30, 100, 300 and 1000 ppm
Reference substance (positive control):
no

Results and discussion

Effect concentrations
Duration:
14 d
Dose descriptor:
LC50
Effect conc.:
> 1 000 mg/kg soil dw
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
mortality
Remarks on result:
other: no mortalities at the highest concentration of 1000 ppm
Details on results:
- Mortality at end of exposure period: none
- Total mass of adults at beginning of test: since all worms survived at 1000 ppm and increase their body weight, only one replicat of the concentrations 30, 100 and 300 ppm was evaluated. 0 ppm: 9.48 g (start) / 9.51 g (end); 30 ppm: 2.5 g / 2.76 g; 100 ppm: 2.6 g / 2.64 g; 300 ppm: 2.33 g / 2.37 g; 1000 ppm: 9.28 g/ 9.75 g
- Changes in body weigth of live adults (% of initial weight) at end of exposure period: 0 ppm: increase of body weight by 3.16%; 30 ppm: increase of body weight by 10.14%; 100 ppm: increase of body weight by 1.53%; 300 ppm: increase of body weight by 1.71%; 1000 ppm: increase of body weight by 5.06%.
- No. of offspring produced: not investigated
- No. of unhatched cocoons: not investigated
- Morphological abnormalities: not investigated
- Behavioural abnormalities: not investigated
- Other biological observations: none
