Fish

Two studies on the short-term toxicity to fish are available, the key study (CIBA-GEIGY, 1985) with a warmwater fish (zebrafish) and the supporting study (CIBA-GEIGY, 1978) with four coldwater fish (rainbow trout, carp, catfish and bluegill).

The 96 hour acute toxicity to zebrafish (Danio rerio) was assessed under static conditions. The calculated 96 hour LC50 based on mortality was 9 mg/L. Therefore, the test item is acutely toxic to fish.

Aquatic invertebrates

Daphnia magna were exposed to the test item for 48 hours under static conditions (Institute of Industrial organic Chemistry Branch Pszczyna, 2012). The 48 hour EC50 was determined to be 0.88 mg/L. Therefore, the test item is acutely very toxic to aquatic invertebrates.

Algae

Cultures of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to the test item under static conditions in accordance with the OECD guideline 201 (2006) (Institute of Industrial organic Chemistry Branch Pszczyna, 2012).

 The inhibition of algae growth rate resulted in a ErC50 (72 h) of 27.21 mg/L, whereas the inhibition of algae yield resulted in a EyC50 (72 h) of 18.37 mg/L. Therefore, the test item is acutely harmful to aquatic algae.

Microorganisms

Sewage sludge microorganisms were exposed to the test item (CIBA-GEIGY, 1989). The IC50 value based on respiration rate was ≥100 mg/L after a 3 h contact time. Therefore, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

In general, it should be mentioned that the composition contains < 1 % p-Nonylphenol (CAS 104-40-5) as impurity. p-Nonylphenol is part of the dossier "4-Nonylphenol, branched and linear [substances with a linear and/or branched alkyl chain with a carbon number of 9 covalently bound in position 4 to phenol, covering also UVCB- and well-defined substances which include any of the individual isomers or a combination thereof]" for the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern for Authorisation (Decision number ED/169/2012; Equivalent level of concern having probable serious effects to the environment (Article 57 f)).

However, no decision is made by now.
