Applicant's summary and conclusion

Based on the chemcial structure of AVE 5530 EVA-KET, surface-active properties are excluded.
Executive summary:

The test method for the determination of the surface tension of a substance in aqueous solution as described in Test Guideline A.5 of EC Directive 92/69/EEC, Annex V, Part A, was replaced by a theoretical based evaluation. Substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m are considered as surface-active materials under the recommended test conditions. In general, as stated in the guideline, substances with water solubility below 1 mg/L need not be tested. The water solubility of test substance AVE 5530 EVA-KET was determined to be 2.48 mg/L (following determination according to European Economic Community (EEC), EEC directive 92/69, part A, Methods for the determination of physico-chemical properties, A.6 “Water Solubility“, EEC publication no O.J. L383 A, December 1992). With water solubility only slightly above 1 mg/L, performing a study on surface active properties was considered not meaningful and experimental determination not likely. Taking the molecular structure of AVE 5530 EVA-KET into consideration, surface-active properties can be excluded. In addition, Annex VII of the REACH regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of 18 December 2006 and its Corrigendum, dated 30 December 2006, state that this test is not necessary if the molecular structure does not indicate surface tension properties. Thus, experimental determination of the surface tension of AVE 5530 EVA-KET was not performed.
