Key value for chemical safety assessment

Justification for classification or non-classification

Isophamchloride is a precursor of the pharmaceutical product ifosfamide an an antineoplastic and immunosuppressive drug. This material has recently been evaluated by the Health Council of the Netherlands (reference: Health Council of the Netherlands. Ifosfamide; Evaluation of the carcinogenicity and genotoxicity. The Hague: Health Council of the Netherlands, 2008; publication no. 2008/06OSH.)

In this report, the committee evaluated ifosfamide. Based on the available information, the committee was of the opinion that ifosfamide should be considered as carcinogenic to humans. This recommendation was comparable to the EU classification in category 2. The committee was of the opinion that ifosfamide acts by a stochastic genotoxic mechanism.

Consequenlty, due to the structural similarity, Isophamchloride has been classified as a Category 3 carcinogen.
