Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The flash point of PSOA was determined to be 62.5°C. No flammability in contact with water and no pyrophoric properties are expected for PSOA.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

Flammability (liquids):

The flash point of PSOA (Peroxy sulfonated oleic acids) was measured in a closed cup according to EU Method A.9, OPPTS 830.6315 and UN Manual Test Methods 32.4. Two independent determinations were performed. Flash points of 62.5 °C and 66.0 °C were measured; decomposition and strong foaming were observed after measurement. The lower flash point of 62.5 °C is used for safety reasons.

Flammability in contact with water:

The chemical structure of PSOA does not contain chemical groups, capable of causing the development of a dangerous amount of (flammable) gas (e.g. hydrogen), when in contact with damp air or water. In addition, from experience in handling and use no flammability in contact in water is expected, as the substance is marketed in aqueous solutions. Therefore, the test substance is not considered highly flammable in contact with water.

Pyrophoric properties:

From the structural formula of PSOA it can be concluded that the test substance is not pyrophoric. PSOA does not contain any chemical group that might lead to spontaneous ignition shortly after coming into contact with air at room temperature. In addition, from experience in handling and use no ignition in contact with air is expected.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the flash point of 62.5°C no classification and labelling with respect to flammability according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC and EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 is warranted.
