Explosivity can be defined as the tendency of a substance to undergo violent and rapid decomposition, under appropriate conditions, to produce heat and or gas.

According to the Method A14, Explosive Properties of Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 of 30 May 2008, a experimental test “… need not be performed when available thermodynamic information (e. g. heat of formation, heat of decomposition) and/or absence of certain reactive groups in the structural formula establishes beyond reasonable doubt that the substance is incapable of rapid decomposition with evolution of gases or release of heat (i. e. the material does not present any risk of explosion). ” Numerous chemical groups have been associated with explosive properties. Examples of such groups are included in the table below:

The explosive properties of amides, C12-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl) were predicted based on its structure as per Method A14 and considering the guidance provided in the section R. of Chapter R.7a: ECHA Endpoint specific guidance. The structure of amides, C12-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl) was assessed and found not to have functionality or chemical groups associated with explosivity or that could imply explosivity.


Based on the chemical structure of amides, C12-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl), the result for the explosive properties has been predicted negative. It can therefore be assumed that amides, C12-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl), does not present a risk of explosion.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with Annex VII column 2 adaptation of REACH, the explosiveness of amides, C12-18 (even numbered) and C18-unsatd., N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl) is adequately addressed based on the fact that the chemical structure contains no chemical groups associated with explosive properties. No classification is required for explosiveness according to EC (67/548/EEC) and CLP criteria (EC 1272/2008).
