Description of key information

Two studies are included in the dossier.  The first study was conducted on dicot plants (S.bicolor and B.napus) and the second on the hybrid poplar trees.   The results of the studies are shown below.
S.bicolor - EC50 48mg/L, NOEC 19mg/L
B.napus - EC50 19mg/L, NOEC 6.9mg/L
Poplar - zero growth of poplar trees is 269 +/- 29 mg/L. and concentration resulting in a 50% reduction in transpiration is 160 +/- 33 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

In the study conducted on plants the authors conclude that concentrations required to induce toxic effects in higher plants would only occur following major accidental release. Environmental levels recorded by number of authors indicate that and adequate levels of safety existed between expected concentrations and those creating adverse effects in higher plants.

In the study conducted on poplar trees it is evident from the results obtained that deciduous trees tolerate quite high concentrations of chlorinated hydrocarbons and the authors conclude that as the concentrations of these materials in groundwater is usually less than 1,000ug/L adverse effects should not be encountered/expected in the environment if phytoremediation measures are employed.
