No studies are available on the toxicity of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl dioctanoate (CAS No. 31335-74-7) to terrestrial macroorganisms. Therefore, a read-across to the category members 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS No. 42222-50-4) and Heptanoic acid, ester with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS No. 68855-18-5) was conducted. This read across approach is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5. Grouping of substance and read across approach. Further justification is given within the endpoint summary 6.1 and within the category justification in Section 13.

The key study conducted with Heptanoic acid, ester with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS No. 42222-50-4) was performed according to OECD Guideline 222 and GLP (Amsel, 2013). The test organism Eisenia fetida was exposed to the nominal test concentrations of 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg soil dw for 56 days. No significant effects on reproduction were observed, and the NOEC was reported to be ≥ 1000 mg/kg dw.

The key study conducted with Heptanoic acid, ester with 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl dioleate (CAS No. 68855-18-5) was performed as a limit test according to OECD Guideline 207 and GLP (Harris, 2013). During 14 days, the test organism Eisenia fetida was exposed to the nominal test concentration of 1000 mg/kg soil dw. No mortality occurred during the study and the LC50 was reported to be > 1000 mg/kg dw.

Thus, based on the above mentioned results, and due to the structural and profile similarities of the substances, as are explained with in the overall endpoint summary 6.3 it can be concluded that no effects on soil macroorganisms are expected up to the limit of water solubility for 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediyl dioctanoate.
