Description of key information

The 48h EC50 range for Toxicity to aquatic invertebrates ranged from 0.62 (DCPD 92% proprietary study) to 8 mg/l (MITI Japan) . With a short term NOEC range of < 1.8 (MITI Japan) to 0.22 mg/l (Safepharm Laboratories, 1995).  The MITI study identified in the SIDS Initial Assessment was unavailable for review.

Data was not available for 3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,7 -methano-1H-indene, therefore available data has been read across from 3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7 -methanonoindene.

Safepharm Laboratories (1995) provided the key study endpoint value. The study identified a 48h median effect concentration (EC50) of DCPD 92% to Daphnia magna. This was calculated to be 0.62 mg/l with 95% confidence limits of 0.52-0.72 mg/l. The no observed effect concentration was 0.22 mg/l. Only limited information was provided on the solvent vehicle and results are reported based on nominal concentrations. However, the study is considered suitable as a key study for this endpoint as it is the most conservative value reported.

The MITI study reviewed in the OECD SIDS was unavailable for review but showed an EC50 of 8 mg/l. As it has been through the regulatory review process previously it has been included here as a supporting study. Passino-Reader (1997) is a near guideline study which provides an EC50 of 4.2 mg/L for Daphnia pulex. The study is also considered adequate as a supporting study.
