Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Farnesane is not readily biodegradable under the strict test conditions of OECD TG 301B. Based on modelled data and supporting studies, it is predicted farnesane is inherently biodegradable.

Additional information

Farnesane has been tested in an OECD 301B test and also in a sea water biodegradation test. It is insoluble in water (0.25 µg/L) and is not expected to hydrolyse. It is not readily biodegradable but does degrade over time as evidenced by 32.4% degradation in 28 days in an OECD 301B study. An additional supporting OECD 301B study showed 11.7% degradation after 28 days.

Further support that it degrades is provided by a study showing a half life of 3.5 days in seawater when tested at or around the limit of solubility. In addition, modelled data (EpiSiuite v 4.11, BIOWIN v4.10 and BioHCWin v1.01), predict that farnesane will not be readily biodegradable, that it will be ultimately biodegradable in a period of weeks to months and that has a half-life is 22 days.
