Conclusion on classification

The classification of the butylene oligomers is based upon the available experimental and calculated data for member streams. When experimental data are available these have been used in preference to the calculated value for that carbon number, although in most cases the calculated and experimental values are in good agreement.

The data indicate that for streams which are composed of C12 oligomers and higher then no acute effects are seen at saturation. As C12 members of this category are considered readily biodegradable then they would not have an environmental classification under the CLP Regulation. For category members with C16 +, no effects are expected at saturation and as these compounds have not been shown to be readily biodegradable and have a log Kow of >4, then the C16 streams would meet the criteria for classification as chronic category 4.

Experimental data are not available for the predominantly C8 streams in this category. Classification is therefore based on calculated data, which would result in a classification of Acute and Chronic Category 1 under the CLP Regulation, as the lowest predicted EC50 is 0.773 mg/L for Daphnia, the substance is considered not readily biodegradable and the predicted log Kow for this stream is >4. On the basis of this value, an acute M factor of 1 has been assigned. As a chronic dataset is not available, the acute M factor of 1 is applied to the chronic classification.
