Description of key information

A study on short-term toxicity to fish is not available for 4-phenylbutan-2-one. The endpoint was covered by read across from the structurally similar substance acetophenone. The 96-hour LC50 value for acetophenone determined in a 96-hour study with Fathead minnow under flow-through conditions was 162 mg/L. By taking into account the molecular weights of acetophenone (120.15 g/mol) and 4-phenylbutan-2-one (148.2 g/mol) this can be converted to a LC50 value of 199.8 mg/L.

Additional information

The short-term toxicity of the substance to fish is covered by read across from the structurally similar substance acetophenone (CAS number 98-86-2). A valid and reliable short-term toxicity study was conducted with Pimephales promelas under flow-through conditions over a period of 96 hours. The dilution water in the test was taken from Lake Superior. The nominal test concentrations in the range from 31.9 to 246 mg/L were confirmed by analysis with GLC method and effect levels were based on geometric means of measured concentrations. Mortality was only observed in the test group exposed to the highest test concentration (nominal 246 mg/L, measured 218 mg/L) and affected fish lost equilibrium prior to death. The LC50 value over 96 hours was 162 mg/L. Fish tested at the second-highest test concentration (nominal 148 mg/L, measured 117 mg/L) did not school. The behavioural EC50 value was also 162 mg/L. The LC50 value determined for acetophenone can be converted by using a factor of 1.2335 taking into account the molecular weights of acetophenone (120.15 g/mol) and 4-phenylbutan-2-one (148.2 mg/L). This results in a LC50 value of 199.8 mg/L.
