Short-term toxicity to fish:

4 -Acetylmorpholine was tested in a static acute toxicity test according to OECD 203 withDanio rerio. The 96 -h LC50was 6812 mg/L (BASF AG 17F0441/915081). The test concentration were not analytically verified, but are assumed to be stable over the test period.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

The acute toxicity of 4 -acetylmorpholine (CAS 1696 -20 -4) was assessed via a read-across approach since no experimental data are available for this substance. Test data forDaphnia magnawere taken from studies with other N-substituted morpholine structures. All studies are reliable with restrictions since no chemical verification of the test item concentrations was performed.

The following data were used:

- 4 -Methylmorpholine (CAS 109 -02 -4): 48 -h EC50 > 100 mg/L (BASF AG, 1991; Study No. 1/91/0270/50/1)

- 4 -Ethylmorpholine (CAS 100 -74 -3): 48 -h EC50 = 580 mg/L (BASF AG, 1989; Study No. 01/89/0733)

- 4 -Morpholinecarbaldehyde (CAS 4394 -85 -8): 48 -h EC50 > 500 mg/L (BASF AG, 1987; Study No. 1/1679/2/88)

Growth inhibition to aquatic algae:

The acute toxicity of 4 -acetylmorpholine (CAS 1696 -20 -4) was assessed via a read-across approach since no experimental data are available for this substance. Test data for aquatic green algae were taken from studies with other N-substituted morpholine structures. All studies are reliable with restrictions since no chemical verification of the test item concentrations was performed.

The following data were used:

- 4 -Ethylmorpholine (CAS 100 -74 -3): 72 -h EC50 = 580 mg/L (BASF AG 1989; Study No. 01/89/0733)

- 4 -Morpholinecarbaldehyde (CAS 4394 -85 -8): 72-h EC50 = 23880 mg/L (BASF AG 1990; Study No. 01/90/143)

With high probability acutely not harmful to aquatic algae.

Toxicity to microorganisms:

The inhibiting effect of 4 -acetylmorpholine on the respiration activity of domestic activated sludge was investigated in a study according to OECD 209. The 30 min EC20 was determined to be larger than 100 mg/L (BASF AG, 1992; Study No. 91/1665/08/1). Taking this value, the inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

This assessment is supported by the results of a growth inhibition study with Pseudomonas putida according to German Industrial Standard DIN 38412, part 8 (BASF AG, 1992; Study No. 91/1665/70/2). The 16 -h EC10 and also the EC50 were determined to be greater than 10000 mg/L, therefore indicating a low toxicity towards bacteria.
