The ready biodegradability of the test material was determined in accordance with the standardised guidelines OCED 301 F, EU Method C.4-D and EPA OPPTS 835.3110 by the measurement of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) in a Manometric Respirometry Test. During the study, the test material at a concentration of 100 mg/L was exposed to activated sewage sludge micro-organisms with culture medium in sealed culture vessels in the dark at 21 ± 0.8 ºC for 28 days. The degradation of the test material was assessed by the measurement of daily oxygen consumption values. Control solutions with inoculum and the standard material, aniline, together with a toxicity control were used for validation purposes.

Under the conditions of the study, the test material attained 87% degradation after 28 days, calculated from the oxygen consumption values. However, the test material did not meet the 10 day window validation criterion, whereby 60% degradation must be attained within 10 days the degradation exceeding 10%. However, the test material is a UVCB and the time window may be waived according to CLP as the substance did exhibit the potential for rapid degradation. In terms of classification and labelling requirements, the test material may be considered as readily biodegradable as evidence of >70% degradation has been shown over a 28 day period in a standard biodegradation study.
