Since no reliable long-term toxicity tests with fish are available for C16-18 and C18 unsatd. AS Na (CAS 1394155-71-5), in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 a read-across to another structurally related category members was conducted. Read-across data available for C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1) and C16-18AS Na (CAS 68955-20-4) were used; toxicity of alkyl sulfates is dependent on carbon chain length. C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1) will represent the worst case scenario for C16-18 and C18 unsatd. AS Na (CAS 1394155-71-5).

They key study was performed with C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1) according to EU Method C.2 and GLP principles (Scholz 1997). Daphnids were exposed to five test concentrations up to 118 mg/L (measured value corresponding to 100 mg/L nominal concentration) for 48 hours under static conditions. The 48-hour EC50 value was determined based on mobility of daphnids as 15 mg/L (nominal concentration). Moreover, a 24-hour toxicity test with Daphnia magna is available for C16-18AS Na (CAS 68955-20-4; Steber 1988). This test was performed according to DIN 38412, part 11 method. Daphnids were exposed to several concentrations of the test substance, no analytical monitoring is available. The 24-hour EC50 value based on mobility was determined to be 275 mg/L (nominal concentrations).

Due to structure and property similarities with the tested category member it can be concluded that the above results apply also to C16-18 and C18 unsatd.AS Na (CAS 1394155-71-5).

It is expected that the 48-hour EC50 value for aquatic invertebrates of CAS 1394155-71-5 will be comparable to the EC50 value of 15 mg/L recorded during the C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1) testing.
