Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The key information for skin and eye irritation endpoints is read across from 1-decanol (CAS 112-30-1). The key study in rabbit (Eurofins 2008; rel 1) and reliability 2 human data suggest 1-decanol not to be a skin irritant. The key study for eye irritation (Eurofins 2008; rel 1) found the test substance to be an eye irritant based on corneal opacity readings of 1, iritis readings of 2 and conjunctival redness and chemosis scores of ¿2 in all animals.

Additional information

In the absence of data on the irritation potential of decanol (branched) the key information was read across from 1 -decanol (CAS 112 -30 -1). A comparative 24 hour occluded human study by Kaestner (1977) reports only slight quickly reversible irritation in human, which is supported by a study by Robinson (1998) which shows no irritant effects in man. Kaestner's comparative study highlights the effects of 1 -decanol to be more pronounced in rabbit than man.

Effects on eye irritation: irritating

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available information read across from 1 -decanol (CAS 112 -30 -1), no classification is proposed for skin irritation. Accordingly, decanol (branched and linear) is proposed to be classified as category 2 eye irritant in accordance with current EC regulation 1271/2008 (CLP).
